About Satyananda Yoga
Satyananda Yoga, also known as Bihar Yoga, was developed by Swami Satyananda Saraswati, a disciple of Swami Sivananda. In this approach, yoga is not simply a series of physical postures; rather, it is a path toward creating harmony between the body, mind, emotions, and the deeper dimensions of human existence.
One of the important concepts in this tradition is the quality of the head, heart, and hands, representing harmony between intelligence and awareness, emotions, and action.
Satyananda practices are generally performed at a calm pace, without intense physical pressure. Particular emphasis is placed on self-awareness, body awareness, conscious breathing, observing emotions and feelings, conscious release and relaxation, and being fully present in the moment.
Main Components of the Practice
Satyananda classes bring together different aspects of yoga, including:
• Asana: Physical practices that strengthen the body and improve flexibility
• Pranayama: Conscious breathing practices designed to promote balance and mental calm
• Visualization and Body Awareness: Consciously observing and experiencing the body throughout the practice
• Meditation: Focusing the mind, observing mental activity, and cultivating awareness
• Mantra and Relaxation Techniques: Practices for calming the mind and enhancing presence and awareness
Teaching Approach
In this approach, the goal is not simply to perform the postures correctly. Instead, practitioners gradually learn to observe and consciously experience their body, breath, emotions, and mental state.
This approach can be particularly suitable for those seeking greater calm, reduced mental tension, improved concentration and self-awareness, and a deeper connection between body and mind.
With an emphasis on calmness, observation, and awareness, Satyananda classes create a space where yoga can move beyond physical movement and become part of a journey toward self-discovery and personal growth.
