Milk for Vegans…!?

By Setareh Kiumarsi

What can vegans drink instead of milk…?!

Vegans are people who do not consume any food of animal origin (including meat, poultry, fish, dairy, etc.).

Outside of Iran, there are many vegan products available in stores that can be used instead of milk, such as almond milk, coconut milk, soy milk, rice milk, cashew milk, hemp milk, and more… Recently, in Iran, a brand called mylkit has started producing almond milk.

But among these options, which one is better, healthier, a better source of calcium, and easier to digest?

Many vegans and vegetarians tend to consume soy milk because it is known as a rich source of protein. However, soy milk (like all other soy products) is generally better to avoid?! The reason is that soy products are often genetically modified, and in many people, they can cause allergies or sensitivity reactions.

Almond milk and coconut milk are better and more balanced than other options, especially when homemade (factory-made versions are full of preservatives and additives that are not beneficial).

Almond milk is warm and moist, making it more suitable for people with a cold constitution; those with a hot constitution should not overconsume it.

Coconut milk is cool and moist, making it suitable for people with a hot constitution; those with a cold constitution should avoid excessive consumption.

For those living outside of Iran… if using store-bought almond or coconut milk, dilute them slightly before drinking. Factory-made versions often add thickening agents to improve taste, but this makes them harder to digest!

You can also mix half a cup of almond milk with half a cup of coconut milk to balance them. This combination is generally suitable for both hot and cold constitutions.

These two types of milk are very easy to digest and do not need to be consumed on an empty stomach like animal milk! They can be consumed as a snack at any time of day.
