Combining Milk with Other Foods

شیر

By Setareh Kiumarsi

Imagine squeezing a few drops of lemon juice into a glass of milk—the milk curdles immediately. This tells us something important about milk: our digestive system needs to secrete a non-acidic enzyme to digest it properly.

Now, if milk is combined with foods that require acidic enzymes for digestion, it curdles inside the stomach, and essentially turns into toxins. What kind of foods cause this reaction?

Legumes, animal proteins (red meat, poultry, seafood), vegetables, bananas, sour fruits, cheese, yogurt, sour cream and so on.

So ideally, don’t eat anything else for at least three hours before or after drinking milk, and don’t cook milk or cream into savory dishes. Foods like lasagna with white sauce, beef stroganoff, steak with cream sauce, barley soup with milk, creamy pastas, and seafood in white sauce all turn into toxic, undigested mucus in the gut. (Goat and camel milk are a little easier to digest than cow’s milk. You can eat something two hours before or after them.)

If you’re having a full breakfast like bread, cheese, eggs, sausages, orange juice, never drink milk with it! As a general rule, never combine milk with sour or salty tastes.

What about strawberry milkshake? Sounds delicious, right? But when you blend sour fruit and milk or ice cream together, you’re drinking curdled milk, or worse, a toxic combination.

Did you know that milk and banana is considered one of the most toxic combos in Ayurveda?
Several studies have shown that this mix is not only extremely heavy and mucus-forming, but it also clogs the sinuses with toxins and can lead to allergies and skin problems.
So skip the banana milkshake!

What can you combine with milk safely?

Milk and almonds: a fantastic immunity booster.
Milk with dates, figs, mulberries, or sweet mango: super nourishing and fattening.
Milk and rice: totally fine—just sweeten it with natural syrups, cardamom, and rose petals instead of sugar, and drizzle a little honey after cooking. (Keep in mind: this is very fattening—great for those wanting to gain weight!)
Milk with carrots: a great combination. Carrots are considered warm and dry in Ayurveda, while milk is cold and moist, so carrots act as a balancing agent and aid digestion. Carrot milk, when drunk on an empty stomach before bed, also acts as a gentle natural laxative.
