In the Ovarian Cyst post, I talked about Kapha-related disorders in the reproductive system (such as cysts, fibroids, PCOS, etc.) and the dietary restrictions needed to support healing. Now imagine you’ve adjusted your diet—what else can you do to locally support detoxification of your reproductive system?

There’s a powerful and effective Ayurvedic treatment called yoni steam that helps cleanse the reproductive system. In this post and the next, I’ll share two formulas using spices commonly found at home. Each is suited to treating specific conditions in the reproductive system.

Kapha Yoni Steam

Benefits:
Treats vaginal infections and HPV, cleanses the uterus, vagina, and ovaries, helps with cysts and fibroids, supports endometriosis and PCOS, regulates menstruation, relieves PMS symptoms, reduces pain during menstruation, balances menstrual blood volume, supports fertility, and treats spotting before and after periods.

Formula:
Turmeric (1) + Thyme (1) + Cinnamon (1) + Pennyroyal (1) + Coriander seeds (1)

Instructions:
Combine the above powdered spices in equal parts. Boil 2 tablespoons of the mix in 4 cups of water for 10 minutes. Strain the decoction and pour it into a sitz bath basin (you can buy one online or at pharmacies), then place it on the toilet seat.

Let the steam cool for a few minutes (it should still be steaming, but not scalding). Sit over the basin so that the vaginal opening is directly exposed to the steam. Wrap a towel around your waist to trap the steam. Stay in this position for about 15–20 minutes. Once the water is lukewarm, sit directly in the bath for another 5–10 minutes.

Use the steam 1–2 times per week when you are not menstruating.

Avoid during:
Pregnancy, breastfeeding, or if you have diarrhea.

Vata Yoni Steam

Benefits:
Regulates menstruation, reduces PMS symptoms, increases menstrual blood volume, improves fertility, relieves vaginal dryness, and treats spotting before and after periods.

Formula:
Fennel (1) + Rosemary (1) + Thyme (1) + Chamomile (1) + Mallow (1)

Instructions:
Combine the above powdered herbs in equal parts. Boil 2 tablespoons of the mix in 4 cups of water for 10 minutes. Strain and pour into a sitz bath basin, then place it on the toilet seat.

Let it cool for a few minutes (it should be warm and steaming but not burning). Sit over the basin so that the steam reaches the vaginal area. Cover your waist with a towel to retain the steam. Stay in this position for about 15–20 minutes. After the steam cools, sit in the bath for 5–10 more minutes.

Use the steam 1–2 times per week when you are not menstruating.

Avoid during:
Pregnancy, breastfeeding, or if you have diarrhea.
