Viparita Karani – Balasana

Has sleeplessness drained your energy?

Do you long for a deep and peaceful night’s rest?

Did you know that an imbalance of the Vata dosha plays an important role in insomnia?

When Vata increases in the head region, the mind becomes overly active. Thoughts and worries keep swirling endlessly, and the mind loses its stillness and stability. As a result, falling asleep becomes difficult, or sleep becomes light and easily disturbed — even the faint ticking of a clock can wake you up.

By practicing Viparita Karani (Legs-up-the-Wall Pose) and Balasana (Child’s Pose) before bedtime, you can bring peace and calm to your mind.

Balasana

Why does it help?

Vata-type individuals generally have excess air and ether in the upper body and head. That is why they often experience overthinking, anxiety, restlessness, lack of focus, and insomnia.

Asanas that encourage upward fluid circulation and increase blood flow to the head help balance Vata and calm the mind.

 What else can we do?

– Before going to bed, apply a mix of coconut oil and sweet almond oil to the soles of your feet, the crown of your head, and inside your nostrils. This nourishes the body, balances Vata, reduces restlessness in the head, and helps you fall asleep more easily.

– Steam your face and head with warm water for 10 minutes before sleep. Add a few drops of chamomile oil, lavender oil, or rosewater to the steam. You can also sprinkle a few drops of these oils or rosewater on your pillow to promote deeper sleep.

– Take a warm shower or soak in a hot bath about 30 minutes before bed. The warmth and moisture balance Vata, relax the nervous system, and prepare the body for rest.

– One or two hours before bed, drink a soothing herbal tea:

Combine equal parts of the following herbs (whole, not powdered): valerian root, lemon verbena, lemon balm, lavender, chamomile, and hibiscus.

Add one teaspoon of this blend to a cup of boiling water, plus one teaspoon of lemon juice and one teaspoon of honey. Let it steep and enjoy before bed.

(Alternatively, you can use Valerian Tea from the Mehrgiah brand. Those outside Iran can find it on Amazon.)
