The Neti Pot and Nasal Cleansing Ritual

by Setareh Kiumarsi

In a previous post about air pollution and clearing the respiratory tract of phlegm and smoke, we mentioned the Neti pot. But do you know what it actually is?

The Neti pot is a small vessel traditionally used in India for thousands of years to cleanse the nasal passages. It helps clear the respiratory tract by gently flushing warm saline water through the nasal cavity. You can find it at yoga supply stores or natural food markets.

So how do you use a Neti pot?
Here are the steps to perform a nasal rinse using the Neti pot. (It’s highly recommended to learn from a yoga instructor or watch instructional videos on YouTube if you’re new to it.)

Step 1 – In a cup of previously boiled, slightly warm water (just above room temperature), dissolve 1/2 teaspoon of salt. Pour the saline solution into the Neti pot.

Step 2 – Place the tip of the Neti pot into your right nostril, sealing the opening. Tilt the pot slightly upward, lean your upper body forward, and gently tilt your head to the left. The saline solution will enter through the right nostril and exit through the left. Remember to breathe through your mouth the entire time.

Step 3 – After about half of the water has passed through, remove the pot and lean forward fully to drain any remaining water from the nasal passages. Then repeat the same process with the left nostril. If you’re using a Neti pot for the first time, it’s a great idea to watch a video demonstration online, especially on YouTube.

The rinsing is done—but there are still important steps to follow.

Step 4 – Once the Neti pot is empty, it’s crucial to make sure all the water is completely drained from your nose and sinuses. Retained water can lead to sinus infections!

Step 5 – First, bend forward completely (refer to the illustration if available).

Step 6 – In this position, point the tip of your nose directly downward. Forcefully exhale through your nose (like blowing your nose) about 5 to 10 times. Next, while still bent forward, turn your head to the left and close the right nostril with your finger. Exhale forcefully through the left nostril 5 to 10 times. Then switch sides. Turn your head to the right, close the left nostril, and exhale through the right.

Step 7 – Once all water is expelled, apply a small amount of sweet almond oil or coconut oil inside your nostrils to keep them moisturized.
