Salt from the Perspective of Ayurveda

_Did you know that just a pinch of salt can help digestion and also enhance the flavors of other ingredients in your food?

_Salt stimulates the secretion of saliva and helps draw out undigested mucus and excess moisture from the digestive tract… much like how salt melts snow and ice when sprinkled on the ground.

_That’s why it’s beneficial to place a pinch of salt on your palm before eating and gently rub it around your lips with your tongue. After finishing your meal, you can also rub a bit of salt on your teeth with your tongue. This simple ritual aids digestion and is great for dental health as well.

_However, keep in mind that while a small amount of salt supports digestion, too much of it can disturb the digestive fire (Agni) and fill the digestive tract with toxins… think of processed salty foods like chips, puffed snacks, or overly salty cheese.

_Factory-processed salts contain far fewer minerals compared to natural rock or sea salt. In contrast, rock salt and sea salt are rich in essential minerals such as sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, and iron. When consumed properly and in moderation, they don’t cause the same problems as refined salts (like high blood pressure, swelling, or blood thickening).

_You can easily find rock salt at herbal stores. Pink Himalayan salt is one of the best types for cooking and can be purchased from Govinda Natural Stores. Sea salt from Lake Urmia is also available at Sabos health store branches across the city.
