Proper Consumption of Watermelon in Ayurveda

نحوه مصرف صحیح هندوانه از منظر طب آیورودا

By Setareh Kiumarsi

Watermelon is a very cooling fruit and is considered one of the best remedies for Pitta (heat/ bile) imbalances. However, eating it during autumn and winter is not recommended! Watermelon simultaneously disrupts Vata (air) balance, causes gas, and also increases Kapha (phlegm), leading to water retention in the body.

Watermelon should always be eaten on an empty stomach and should not be combined with any other food or fruit (even melons or cantaloupe), as this may cause acidity or reflux.

To aid digestion, chew a few of its seeds along with the fruit; this helps balance both Vata and Kapha.

Another good digestive tip is to sprinkle a little salt and black pepper on the watermelon.
