Proper Consumption of Nut Butters in Ayurveda

By Setareh Kiumarsi

Did you know that it takes around 30–35 peanuts to make just one tablespoon of peanut butter?!

Now imagine eating two tablespoons of peanut butter (or any other nut butter) spread on bread, which is already mucus-producing (phlegm-forming)… that means you’ve just eaten the equivalent of about 60 peanuts with bread!

This combination is so heavy and sticky that it can suppress your appetite for hours.

In other words, when you eat large amounts of nut butter in one sitting, your body can neither digest it properly nor absorb its nutrients effectively!

The Right Amount of Nut Butter per Serving?!

The ideal serving of nut butter is 1–2 teaspoons per meal no more.

To make it more digestible, mix it with 2–3 teaspoons of honey and a bit of digestive spices such as saffron, cardamom, cinnamon, or rose powder.

If you pour this mixture over a bowl of baked or steamed apple and then spread it on bread, it will not only taste much better but also be easier to digest!

Why?… Because the fiber in apples acts like a sponge, it absorbs the phlegm and oiliness of the nut butter and helps your body digest it more easily.
