Heart Palpitations

Balasana

Balasana – Supta Baddha Konasana

Do you experience heart palpitations? Did you know that an imbalance of the Vata dosha plays an important role in this condition?

The Vata dosha is dominated by the elements of air and ether. When Vata becomes imbalanced, the body fills with coldness and dryness — as if a cold wind were constantly blowing through the body’s channels. This imbalance can show up as bloating, constipation, cold hands and feet, stiffness in the joints, and more.

Around the heart, there is a soft, slippery sac called the pericardium. It protects the heart, keeps it moist, and prevents friction with surrounding tissues.

Now imagine this sac becoming dry. The heart would rub against the tissues around it with each beat, creating pressure, inflammation, and an irregular rhythm.

 What to do?

By practicing yoga postures that help fluids move upward and increase blood circulation in the chest area, you can reduce dryness in the pericardium and support a healthy, steady heartbeat.

Try Balasana (Child’s Pose), Viparita Karani (Legs-up-the-Wall Pose), and Adho Mukha Svanasana (Downward-Facing Dog Pose).

Practicing Supta Baddha Konasana (Reclined Bound Angle Pose) opens the chest and helps blood and oxygen flow more easily to the heart muscles.

What else can we do

When you experience palpitations, try one or two of these home remedies:

Digestive lassi: Add a little hot water to 1/4 cup of yogurt and stir until smooth. Then add 3/4 cup of hot water, 1/2 teaspoon fennel powder, and a pinch of salt.

Orange tonic: Mix 1/2 cup orange juice, 1/2 cup hot water, 1 teaspoon honey, 1 teaspoon grape syrup, and a pinch of cardamom.

Drink a cup of tea made with equal parts lemon verbena, borage, and valerian every hour.
