Eggs from the Ayurvedic Perspective…?!

By Setareh Kiumarsi

How do you usually eat your eggs? Do you boil or fry one or two eggs and have them with bread for breakfast? Or do you crack a couple of eggs into a pan, add some tomatoes or tomato paste and mushrooms, and call it a veggie omelet?!

Did you know that eggs are considered warm and moist in Ayurveda? When eaten with bread which itself increases phlegm (mucus) the meal becomes very heavy and difficult to digest!

How can we make eggs easier to digest?!

Never eat more than one egg in a single meal, and limit your egg intake to 2–3 times a week!

Soft-boiled or runny eggs are much easier to digest than hard-boiled ones. Always cook your eggs soft and sprinkle some digestive spices over the yolk… about three parts warm spices (like turmeric, thyme, cumin, cinnamon, rosemary…) to one part cooling spice (like coriander seeds, rose petals, or sumac!

When eggs are cooked as a vegetable omelet, they’re also easier to digest… because vegetables act like sponges, absorbing the egg’s phlegmatic (moist) nature and helping digestion. But tomatoes and mushrooms, which are commonly used in omelets, are themselves moist and phlegm-forming!

Instead, use fibrous, drying vegetables in your omelet… such as spinach, parsley, basil, carrots, bell peppers, celery, or cilantro.

If you don’t have fresh vegetables at home, be sure to eat a handful of fresh herbs like parsley, basil, watercress, or savory alongside your eggs!

If you have high cholesterol, thick blood, skin problems, frequent headaches, heartburn, or acid reflux, it’s better to replace eggs with quail eggs!

Quail eggs are much lighter and easier to digest!
