Almonds in Ayurvedic Perspective…?!

By Setareh Kiumarsi

Did you know that almonds are considered one of the most complete foods in various traditional medicine systems (Iranian, Indian, Chinese, etc.)? They are rich in calcium, boost the immune system, improve blood circulation, and provide warmth to the body.

However, raw almonds are dense and oily, and if consumed in large quantities, they are neither easily digestible nor fully absorbed. The almond skin contains tannic acid… which reduces nutrient absorption?

How to Soak Almonds for Easy Peeling…?!

Always soak almonds and remove their skin. Soaking reduces their density, making them easier to digest and absorb.

To soak properly: Boil water in a small pot, add a handful or two of almonds, and let them boil for a few minutes. Then drain the hot water and pour cold water over the almonds… this loosens the skin.

Store soaked almonds submerged in water in a clean glass container in the fridge; they can last a few days.

Now how to Consume these delicious Almonds…?!

Eat no more than 8–10 almonds per serving.

The best way to eat almonds is with fiber-rich, catabolic foods like vegetables… Almonds alone are heavy and oily, but combined with vegetables, the lightness of the vegetables balances the heaviness, aiding digestion. For example, sprinkle 10 soaked and peeled almonds over a vegetable dish or a salad.

Another option: add 10 almonds on top of cooked apples or pears.

 Almond Drink for Easy Digestion:

Blend the following ingredients to make a nourishing drink:

10 soaked and peeled almonds+ 1–2 dates+1 cup warm water+ A pinch of saffron+2 pinches of cardamom or cinnamon+1 pinch of rose petals+1–2 teaspoons honey

To make it richer, replace warm water with 1 cup warm milk. If you do this, consume it on an empty stomach, ideally at night before sleep.

You can also make almond milk, which can be consumed at any time of day. Almond milk is rich in calcium and very easy to digest.
