Sore Throat

Bhamari – Halasana

Is your throat heavy or sore? Do you feel hoarseness or irritation in your voice and throat?

By practicing Bhamari Pranayama (Humming Bee Breath) and Halasana (Plow Pose), you can bring relief to your throat.

Halasana

The gentle vibration created during Bhamari acts like a soothing massage for your throat and vocal cords. Meanwhile, in Halasana, the muscles around your neck and throat contract, increasing blood circulation and the element of Agni (digestive fire) in this area. This helps clear out thick mucus and congestion accumulated in the throat.

What else can you do?

Mix the following in a glass of warm water and gargle several times a day:

½ teaspoon salt + a pinch of turmeric + a pinch of black pepper + a pinch of cinnamon.

Another tip:

Chew one clove or one whole cardamom seed like gum and swallow it at the end.

And another:

Take a large raw turnip, wash it, cut off the top, and scoop out the inside with a spoon so it becomes like a small bowl. Place it in a container with a lid and fill the hollow with honey. Put the top back on, close the lid, and let it sit at room temperature for about 12 hours.

What you’ll get is a natural syrup made from turnip and honey. Store it in a clean glass jar in the refrigerator — it usually keeps for about a week.

Whenever you feel a cold coming on (for example, if mucus starts building up in your throat, your throat feels sore, your nose gets congested, or your head feels heavy), take one tablespoon of this syrup one to three times a day. (For children, use one teaspoon one to three times a day.)

Just be mindful — turnip is a warming vegetable, so excessive consumption of this syrup may cause headaches or insomnia in people with a naturally warm constitution.
