Halasana – Matsyasana
Do you have a family history of Alzheimer’s or memory loss? Do you often forget where you left your belongings? Or perhaps someone close to you has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s?
In Ayurveda, Alzheimer’s disease is considered a condition of coldness in the brain, where both Vata and Kapha doshas become imbalanced in the head region. It’s as if a layer of fog forms around the brain. When the fire element in the brain decreases, the mind slows down and loses its clarity, freshness, and alertness.
What to do?
By practicing Halasana (Plow Pose) and Matsyasana (Fish Pose), blood circulation to the brain increases, providing more oxygen and nutrients to brain cells — in simple terms, it makes the brain happy and revitalized.
There are also several marma (energy) points located at the crown of the head — Murdhni, Brahmarandhra, and Shivarandhra — which directly influence brain function when stimulated.
In Matsyasana and other postures such as Sirsasana (Headstand), Dwi Pada Viparita Dandasana, and Pincha Mayurasana, these points are activated, improving blood flow and enhancing brain activity.

What else can we do?
Drink the following herbal tea several times a day — it boosts memory and acts as a natural antidepressant:
2 parts dried basil + 1 part rosemary + 1 part gotu kola + ½ part rose petals.
Add one teaspoon of this blend to a cup of boiling water, then add a pinch of saffron and let it steep. Once ready, mix in a few drops of lemon juice, one teaspoon of honey, and a pinch of salt. Drink this tea 3–4 times daily.
Apply a facial mask daily to increase the fire element in the head region and awaken the mind, leaving it fresh and alert.
Mix 3 parts clove + 1 part cinnamon + 3 parts cedar + 1 part myrtle (or use Ananda’s ready-made facial mask instead).
Combine 1–2 teaspoons of this powder with a little warm water to make a soft paste. Apply the paste evenly on your face, leave it for 20 minutes, and rinse it off.
Then, apply rosewater on your face using a cotton pad. If you dislike the scent of rosewater, use fresh aloe vera gel instead.
Mix equal parts black seed oil and sweet almond oil and apply a few drops inside your nostrils once or twice a day.
Eat dinner early and keep it light. Before bedtime, drink a cup of turmeric milk:
In one cup of milk, add ½ teaspoon turmeric, ¼ teaspoon cardamom, and ½ teaspoon rose petals.
Bring it to a boil, let it cool slightly, add honey, and enjoy.
