Hypothyroidism

Halasana – Kapalabhati

Is your thyroid underactive?

By practicing Halasana (Plow Pose) and Kapalabhati (Skull Shining Breath), you can help restore balance and vitality to your thyroid gland.

Halasana
Kapalabhati

The thyroid gland is known as the King of Metabolism because it secretes hormones that directly influence the production of bile, digestive enzymes, and what Ayurveda calls the fire element (Agni). When the thyroid slows down, the digestive fire weakens, metabolism drops, and the processes of digestion, absorption, and elimination are disrupted.

When you practice Halasana, the muscles around the thyroid are compressed and stretched, gently massaging the gland. This mechanical pressure improves blood circulation and the flow of the fire element in that area, stimulating the thyroid and helping increase hormone production.

During Kapalabhati, rhythmic abdominal contractions during exhalation increase blood flow to the upper body and stimulate the thyroid gland, igniting the inner fire (Agni).

Be cautious: Kapalabhati is a powerful breathing technique that should be practiced under the guidance of a qualified yoga teacher. Those with high blood pressure, chronic headaches, hyperthyroidism, severe asthma, or high irritability should practice it carefully.

 What else to do?

In Ayurveda, hypothyroidism is caused by an excess of cold qualities in the body. To address it deeply, your overall diet and lifestyle should be adjusted by an Ayurvedic practitioner.

However, here are some simple home remedies you can start with

Each morning, gently massage the thyroid area with black seed oil (Nigella Sativa) in circular, clockwise motions for about 5 minutes.

Mix the following herbs in powder form in the given ratios

Clove (1) + Orange or Bitter Orange Peel (3) + Black Seed (1) + Ginger (1/8) + Wild Rue (1/2) + Cedar (2)

Take one teaspoon of this mixture, add a little warm water to make a thin paste, and apply it over the thyroid area for 15–20 minutes.

This poultice is quite strong, so if you are taking thyroid medication, have your levels checked after one month to ensure your thyroid has not become overactive.

Keep your neck warm by wearing a scarf, especially during cold weather.

Be filled with health and light
