Home Remedy for Heavy Menstrual Bleeding…?!

By Setareh Kiumarsi

Is your period really heavy? Do you experience intense pain during your bleeding days?

— From the very first day of your period when full bleeding begins, avoid eating foods, spices, and herbal teas that are menstruation-inducing, including:

  • Eggplant, raw garlic, raw onion, saffron, cinnamon, fennel, anise, Persian hogweed, fenugreek seeds and leaves, dill, pennyroyal, thyme, rosemary, black pepper, red pepper, curry, cayenne, masala, chili, mustard, caffeine (including black tea, coffee, instant coffee, etc.), and alcohol.

— Also during this period, avoid consuming chocolate, cheese, yogurt, peanuts, beef, veal, pork, ketchup, mayonnaise, soy, spicy foods, and sour foods (especially those containing vinegar).

What Can Help Balance the Volume of Menstrual Bleeding?

Herbal Tea:
Mix the following herbs (whole, not powdered) in the given proportions. If one of them is larger in size than the others, break it by hand so the blend is evenly sized:

Cardamom (2) + dried quince (1) + coriander seeds (1)

Each time you want to make the tea, take one teaspoon of the mix and add it to a cup of boiling water. Let it steep, then add a few drops of lemon juice, one teaspoon of honey, and a pinch of salt.

Drink this tea 2–3 times per day until the bleeding subsides.

Boil 1 teaspoon of psyllium seeds in a cup of mint distillate for a few minutes. Once cooled, add 1 teaspoon of honey. Drink this mixture once a day until the heavy bleeding stops.

Heavy bleeding can lead to dehydration. Starting two hours after each meal, drink the following every hour:

1 cup of warm water + a few drops of lemon juice + 1 teaspoon of honey + a pinch of salt

During the days of heavy bleeding, opt for soup-based meals. Also, include the following in your diet:

  • Coriander rice, baked apple, apple juice, sweet lemon, and pomegranate juice (it’s better to use pomegranate juice made from sour-tasting pomegranates instead of regular ones, because the astringency of juiced pomegranates made with electric juicers can cause bloating and constipation in some people).

Also eat blood-nourishing foods such as:

  • Pumpkin, pistachios, soaked and peeled almonds, pumpkin seeds, dates, lamb meat, and soft-boiled eggs.
