When, where, how much, and how should it be used?

In Ayurveda, Gotu Kola is considered a close friend of the brain. It helps nourish brain cells, refreshes the mind, enhances alertness, and increases serotonin secretion.

What’s its quality?

It is cool and slightly dry in nature. Generally, it is considered balanced and recommended for all body types. However, since it has a cooling quality, Ayurveda advises not to consume it alone. It should be combined with warming herbs to bring its overall nature into balance.

What does it do for the body?

Gotu Kola is antidepressant, anti-anxiety, and rejuvenating for brain cells. It strengthens memory, is used in the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease, helps with epilepsy, is astringent and anti-diarrheal, supports anemia treatment, promotes hair growth, reduces skin inflammation, and is beneficial in conditions like eczema*and psoriasis.

Who should avoid it?

If you suffer from bipolar disorder or are sensitive to SSRIs, it’s best to avoid Gotu Kola.

How to use it:

For depression, anxiety, or restlessness:

Mix dried basil (twice the amount of Gotu Kola) with Gotu Kola.

Add one teaspoon of this mixture to a cup of boiling water, and add a pinch of saffron. Let it steep. After brewing, add a few drops of fresh lemon juice, one teaspoon of honey, and a pinch of salt. Drink this tea 3 to 4 times a day.

For epilepsy:

Combine the following herbs in equal parts:

Thyme (1 part) + Gotu Kola (1 part) + Rosemary (1 part) + Valerian (1 part) + Rose petals (½ part)*

Add one teaspoon of the mixture to a cup of boiling water. After steeping, add a few drops of fresh lemon juice, one teaspoon of honey, and a pinch of salt. Drink this herbal tea 3 to 4 times a day.

For hair loss:
