Balasana – Viparita Karani – Nadi Shodhana
Do you often feel restless and anxious? Do fear and worry take over your mind? Did you know that an imbalance of Vata plays an important role in causing anxiety?
When Vata increases in the head region, it creates too much movement in the mind. All kinds of thoughts and concerns rush in, the mind loses its peace and stability, and anxiety, restlessness, overthinking, fear, and lack of concentration become unwanted daily guests.

What should we do?
People with a Vata constitution usually have more air and space elements in their upper body and head. Therefore, postures that help fluids flow toward the upper body and increase blood circulation in the head area bring Vata dosha back to balance and calm the mind. By practicing Viparita Karani (legs-up-the-wall pose) and Balasana (child’s pose), you can gift your mind peace and stillness.
By doing the breathing technique Nadi Shodhana (alternate nostril breathing), the activity of the sympathetic nervous system decreases, the parasympathetic system is activated, heart rate and blood pressure go down, and both your body and mind find calmness.
What else can we do?
Did you know that a glass of warm spiced digestive lassi can greatly calm Vata and reduce anxiety?
Whenever you feel too stressed, pour two tablespoons of yogurt into a glass. Add a little warm water and stir well until smooth. Then fill the rest of the glass with warm water. Add a pinch of salt and half a teaspoon of powdered chamomile or fennel. Take a few deep breaths and enjoy it slowly.
Anything else?
As we said, an increase in Vata means an increase in coldness and dryness in both body and mind, which creates a fertile ground for anxiety and restlessness.
So, whenever you feel very anxious, expose yourself to warmth and moisture.
For example, take a long warm shower, soak in a hot bath for fifteen minutes, or cover your head with a towel and inhale the steam from hot water while taking deep breaths. For even better results, add a few drops of lavender or rosemary oil to the water.
