Symptoms
What are some signs of anemia?
Loss of appetite, constipation, headaches, pale skin, nails, and lips, chronic fatigue, cold hands and feet, dizziness, irritability, lack of concentration, depression, and more.
Which foods are rich in iron or blood-building and should be included in your diet?
Sesame seeds (especially black sesame), pistachios, almonds, pumpkin seeds, egg yolk, lamb, quail, liver, grapes (especially purple grapes), pomegranate, apples, bananas, plums, dates, raisins, carrots, asparagus, parsley, green peas, lentils, pumpkin, beets (especially beet greens), rice bran.
What else?
If your anemia is accompanied by constipation, warm 2 tablespoons of castor oil in a pan. Then add 2 teaspoons of haritaki powder and sauté until it turns into a brown paste. Store this mixture in a glass jar in the fridge and every night before bed eat 1/2 teaspoon with a glass of warm water.
Try cooking and eating food in copper cookware. Also, at night, fill a copper cup with water and let it sit until morning. In the morning, add a little hot water, a few drops of lemon juice, 1 teaspoon of honey, and a pinch of salt—drink this mixture on an empty stomach.
Two to three times a week, eat one soft-boiled egg with a handful of fresh parsley for breakfast.
Caffeine (coffee, black tea, chocolate, cocoa) is like poison for anemia. Remove caffeinated beverages from your diet and replace them with Ananda’s anemia tea:
Combine the following whole herbs (not in powdered form) in the ratios listed:
Nettle (2) + cumin seeds (1) + lemon balm (1) + parsley seeds (1) + rose petals (1) + rice bran (1)
Each time you prepare this tea, add 1 teaspoon of the blend to a cup of boiling water and let it steep. Before drinking, add a few drops of lemon juice, 1 teaspoon of honey, and a pinch of salt. Drink this tea 3–4 times a day.
Blood-building snacks
If you’re anemic, include the following snacks in your daily diet:
Blood-building smoothie:
Blend the following:
Half a medium mango + 1/2–1 cup unsweetened apple juice + a handful of grapes + 1–2 pinches of cardamom.
When mango is out of season, replace it with 1–2 dates.
Carrot/beet juice:
Juice one raw medium beet and two carrots. Add a pinch of cumin and drink it with breakfast or as a mid-morning snack.
Ojas blood tonic drink:
Blend the following:
10–15 pistachios
1 cup warm water
1 teaspoon sesame (preferably black sesame)
1 pinch saffron + 2 pinches cardamom + 1 pinch rose petals + 1 pinch vanilla
2 teaspoons honey
Blend well and enjoy as a snack several times a week.
Digestive lassi (1–2 times daily):
1/4 cup yogurt (or camel milk lassi) + 3/4 cup boiling water + 1/4 teaspoon turmeric + 1/4 teaspoon cumin + 1/4 teaspoon rose petals + a pinch of salt
If you’re not vegetarian, drink 1–2 cups daily of bone broth made with chicken bones or lamb shank. To prepare, simmer chicken or lamb bones with chopped onion, turmeric, saffron, coriander seeds, salt, and lemon juice in a pot full of water with the lid on, over low heat for several hours. After it cools, skim off the excess fat and refrigerate. Warm a cup before drinking and add a bit of lemon and salt. Have it with lunch or as a snack.
