The weather’s getting warmer, and juicy fruits like watermelon, melon, and cantaloupe are starting to taste extra refreshing!
But have you noticed how eating watermelon right after a meal often leads to acid reflux? Or how your mouth fills with saliva and your throat gets itchy when you eat melon or cantaloupe on top of a full meal?
In Ayurveda, it’s strongly emphasized that watermelon, melon, and cantaloupe should not be eaten with or right after meals. It’s also highly advised not to combine these three fruits with other fruits or even with each other. Each of them should be eaten on their own.
That’s because these fruits digest even faster than most other fruits. When they’re combined with anything else, they disrupt digestion and throw your gut off balance.
So enjoy them as a standalone snack, at least 3 hours after and 1 hour before a main meal, and try to avoid eating them at night.
Sprinkle a little salt over your watermelon and chew a few of the seeds well before swallowing.
For melon and cantaloupe, sprinkle a bit of salt and some ground cardamom or green cumin powder on top.
Also, steer clear of combinations like bread and cheese with watermelon, or bread with melon or cantaloupe. These are highly incompatible and strongly discouraged.
